Some quick facts that you might be interested to know*
Fatal Accidents in Construction 2018/19
- Average of 30 workers and 7 members of the public each year over the last 5 years
- Note that 49% of deaths over that same 5 year period were due to falls from height and 31% of all serious injuries
- Small construction sites account for 75% of all deaths in the construction industry
- Over a third of the fatalities were suffered by self-employed persons
- For every worker killed on site, approximately 100 die from ill health due to past exposures – particularly asbestos (2500 deaths) and silica (600 deaths)
- There were 253 fire-related fatalities in 2018/19 ending in March (Source; Fire and Rescue Service in England, GOV.UK)
- Insurance policies don’t cover everything; possibly paying out only for serious injuries or damage – you will have to bear all the other costs – sick pay, extra staff pay, investigation, work stoppage, negative publicity and potentially a loss of business.
- Defective products, accidents and incidents, fires or environmental breaches all have the potential to cause criminal or civil litigation that could result in fines or even imprisonment.
